What is the best diet for me?
What is the best diet for me? I have just watched this fascinating TED talk by Eran Segal, in which he discusses the question of what the best diet is for humans.
Eran explains that he feels we have been asking the wrong question, because we assume the best diet depends only on the food, and not on the person eating it. He feels that our genetics, lifestyle and gut bacteria play a crucial role in how we respond to food. This could be why diets work for some people, but not for others.
Eran conducted research around tailoring nutrition to our unique make-up. They focused on blood glucose levels, which can spike after a meal. The aim is to find a diet which keeps our glucose levels more consistent, and avoid the spikes.
They found that people responded differently to certain foods, and so it is important to test your own responses to certain foods. Diets need to be personally tailored to the individual.
Our microbiome has a major impact on health and disease, and we can change it by changing what we eat.
Eran designed an algorithm to predict good and bad diets for people, and has shown that the good diets show even glucose levels while the bad diets have spikes after meals. The good diets also resulted in beneficial changes to gut bacteria.
We can measure our own personal glucose responses to food using simple glucose devices. We can find out which foods cause our own spikes. I find this whole concept fascinating, and it is certainly something I plan to look into in more detail!
Project 365
I set up this website after deciding that I want to build a more creative life for myself, so I can give up my job and be in control of my own destiny.
I have set myself a goal of publishing an article on my website every day this year, to document my journey from employment to self-employment.
The name I chose was Project 365 because I see this as a year that I have dedicated to learning and self-development, as I countdown to freedom. It started on 1st January 2021, so I have 222 days to go!
