How does nutrition affect our health?
How does nutrition affect our health? I have just watched this amazing TED talk by T. Colin Campbell about nutrition. Nutrition is not taught in medical schools, which I find quite astonishing.
There are so many different claims about nutrition that it is almost impossible to decide which are valid. Professor Campbell suggests we stick to two main ideas, firstly that eating whole foods is more beneficial than separating out the component parts. Secondly, that plants provide all the protein we require, up to a maximum of 10% of total calories.
Professor Campbell conducted research on animals which had mutated genes to see if they lead to cancers. If the animals were fed a low protein diet (5% protein) there were no cancers, but with 20% protein there were lots of cancers. He even showed that switching from a high to low protein diet turned off the growth of the precancerous lesions. This shows that cancer is not purely a genetic disease, and that nutrition is important.
It is a truly fascinating area, and one where I plan to do a lot more research!
Project 365
I set up this website after deciding that I want to build a more creative life for myself, so I can give up my job and be in control of my own destiny.
I have set myself a goal of publishing an article on my website every day this year, to document my journey from employment to self-employment.
The name I chose was Project 365 because I see this as a year that I have dedicated to learning and self-development, as I countdown to freedom. It started on 1st January 2021, so I have 220 days to go!
