How can I motivate myself?
How can I motivate myself? I have just watched this very interesting TED talk by Zoe Chance about addictive behaviours. She talks about why some things are so tempting and compelling, and explains that this is because they meet several of our human needs.
There are six needs, and if a behaviour meets at least three of them it is likely to be addictive.
The first need is significance, as we all have the desire to feel that we are important.
The second need is for certainty, as we all have a desire for safety and security.
The third need is for uncertainty, as we all have a desire for variety and unpredictability.
The fourth need is for connection, as we all have a desire for closeness with others.
The fifth need is for growth, as we all have the desire for moving towards our goals.
The sixth need (not covered in the talk) is for contribution, as we all have the desire for helping others.
We can use this framework to develop our own habits, and make behaviours that we care about more addictive.
Project 365
I set up this website after deciding that I want to build a more creative life for myself, so I can give up my job and be in control of my own destiny.
I have set myself a goal of publishing an article on my website every day this year, to document my journey from employment to self-employment.
The name I chose was Project 365 because I see this as a year that I have dedicated to learning and self-development, as I countdown to freedom. It started on 1st January 2021, so I have 261 days to go!
