How can I become the best version of myself?
How can I become the best version of myself? I have just watched a brilliant TED talk by Brady Wilson. He explains how the brain uses 20% of our energy levels, and when we don’t fuel it properly, we lose access to the executive functions, leading to poor decision making. Our brain becomes depleted, rather than energised.
We also need to understand what is important to us in any situation. This can be broken down into 5 key areas: belonging, security, freedom, significance or meaning. When we work with other people, it is vital to understand what matters most to them in the specific situation they are in. The best way we can do that is by asking, and then listening.
This allows hormones to work within our brain. All mammals have oxytocin flowing when we connect with one another, building our sense of trust and rapport.
Mammals have increased dopamine levels flowing through the brain when we sense possibility, building our sense of motivation and innovation. We can help others achieve this state by helping them to see potential and opportunities in any situation.
Mammals are also competitive, and love to make progress. When we achieve goals, and feel valued and respected, serotonin is flowing through our brain. This increases our confidence and self-efficacy. To help others achieve this state we can work with them and help them to make progress.
To do this well, it is important not to put ourselves in their shoes and then try to solve their problems for them. People need to feel heard. We need to let them tell their story, and then ask them how they feel, and how they want to fix things. That genuine interest can energise a person, rather than leaving them depleted.
Project 365
I set up this website after deciding that I want to build a more creative life for myself, so I can give up my job and be in control of my own destiny.
I have set myself a goal of publishing an article on my website every day this year, to document my journey from employment to self-employment.
The name I chose was Project 365 because I see this as a year that I have dedicated to learning and self-development, as I countdown to freedom. It started on 1st January 2021, so I have 308 days to go!
Why not check in on a regular basis to see how I am progressing, and what I have discovered?
