Can ADHD be a benefit rather than a disability?
Can ADHD be a benefit rather than a disability? I have just watched this brilliant TED talk by John Torrens about ADHD. John was diagnosed with this as an adult, but he realised he had been impulsive his whole life. He also felt that medication didn’t work for him, so he decided to accept his ADHD as a superpower rather than a disability.
Many entrepreneurs have ADHD, and John feels a lot of the ADHD traits could actually be advantageous for entrepreneurship, particularly the impulsive traits like sense of urgency, lack of premeditation and sensation seeking. These allow us to act quickly without overthinking.
People with ADHD can be highly functional in some areas, while dysfunctional in others. They also have higher than average rates of dyslexia, anxiety and depression. This can make it harder for them to hold down a job. If we consider ADHD as a difference in abilities, rather than a disability, then it may help us to focus on the advantages that ADHD can bring.
Project 365
I set up this website after deciding that I want to build a more creative life for myself, so I can give up my job and be in control of my own destiny.
I have set myself a goal of publishing an article on my website every day this year, to document my journey from employment to self-employment.
The name I chose was Project 365 because I see this as a year that I have dedicated to learning and self-development, as I countdown to freedom. It started on 1st January 2021, so I have 205 days to go!
